<title>Evolution of optical links toward full-optical transparency</title>

2003

In this paper we review issues of evolution of optical networks towards their full optical transparency and present sequence of eliminating non-transparent elements out of optical links (networks). Architectures of optical commutators with electrical and optical cores have been presented, as well as a structure of OMO (optical-millimeter wave-optical) switching fabric. An example of pure al-optical switch, made by Luxcore, utilizing dispersion compensating elements, wavelength converters and and variable optical attenuators (VOA) operating entirely in optical domain without optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions, was quoted. We brought up an issue of all-optical 3R signal regeneration…

Optical flip-flop memory and routing operation based on polarization bistability in optical fiber

2014

A polarization bistability and hysteresis cycle phenomenon is demonstrated in optical fibers thanks to a counter-propagating four-wave mixing interaction. Based on this process, we successfully report the proof-of-principle of an optical flip-flop memory and a 10-Gbit/s routing operation.

Measuring charge based quantum bits by a superconducting single-electron transistor

2002

Single-electron transistors have been proposed to be used as a read-out device for Cooper pair charge qubits. Here we show that a coupled superconducting transistor at a threshold voltage is much more effective in measuring the state of a qubit than a normal-metal transistor at the same voltage range. The effect of the superconducting gap is to completely block the current through the transistor when the qubit is in the logical state 1, compared to the mere diminishment of the current in the normal-metal case. The time evolution of the system is solved when the measuring device is driven out of equilibrium and the setting is analysed numerically for parameters accessible by lithographic alu…

All-Optical Polarization Control for Telecom Applications

2015

We describe a phenomenon of self-organization of the light state-of-polarization in optical fibers based on a nonlinear cross-polarization interaction between an incident signal and its backward replica. Several proof-of-principles for telecom applications are reported.

Synchronization of Two Photoelastic Light Modulators to Obtain Müeller Matrix

2013

We report a method for the temporal synchronization of two photoelastic light modulators. For synchronizing, we used the transistor-transistor logic output signals from each modulator, which contain the information on the light polarization. These signals were introduced in a phase-detector circuit, which provided the phase difference value between both modulators. Three optical devices were used to test the synchronization method proposed: a polarizer, a half-wave, and a quarter-wave retarder plate. The value of each of the elements of the Mueller matrix for these devices was obtained using the method of the 36 measurements. The results show a high correlation between the theoretical and e…
